Hi! 👋🏼 I am Amber...Pediatric sleep consultant, NICU nurse and mama of two boys 💙

🌟By 5 months old, a 3 nap schedule should be stabilized. 4 naps at this age tends to cause early morning wakings and night wakings. For a 5 month old on 3 naps:

✔Wake times are 2-2.5hrs
✔Total wake time should be around 9 hours.
✔This is the age for 30 min naps! Play around with wake times and nap extensions. Use an earlier bedtime to compensate for bad naps. If you have a 30min nap day, bedtime should be 5:30/6pm to compensate!

🌟For a 6 month old on 3 naps:

✔ Wake times are 2.25-2.5hrs
✔ Total wake time is ~9.5-10hrs
✔ Around this time, there are early signs of the 3-2 nap transition such as shorter naps, more trouble at bedtime and unusual night and early morning wakings.

If you are struggling with your baby’s sleep...make the bedroom as DARK as possible! Here is why 👇🏼

◼ Our circadian rhythm controls our wake and sleep cycles for both babies and adults. Light and darkness play a huge part in this, with light helping us to feel awake during the day, and darkness encouraging us to sleep well at night.

◼ Darkness encourages melatonin production which promotes sleepiness.

◼ Exposure to light blocks this production of melatonin making it harder for our bodies to settle down and fall asleep.

◼ It is no secret that many babies get excited and stimulated by every little thing. The darkness provides them an opportunity to wind down, settle, and get ready for a nice sleep!

But it is important to keep in mind that every baby is different and some may not need it to be completely dark to go to sleep...BUT if your child is having trouble falling to sleep or staying asleep...complete darkness is key!

🛑 A great way to “test” whether the darkness of the room is indeed “dark enough,” is to utilize the 🤚🏼HAND TEST🤚🏼

—> Extend your hand right in front of you in the middle of your child’s room...if you are able to see your hand, it is NOT dark enough. Once you cannot see your hand, the darkness of the room is appropriate.

✅ Build up your child’s sleep pressure appropriately so they are truly ready for their sleep times while avoiding under tiredness!

✅ It helps feed all their sensory needs while they are awake which in turn builds up an appropriate amount of sleep pressure!

✅ It helps with bonding between parents and baby! This active connection keeps both baby and mother connected.

🙃 Around 3 months of age, your baby will start exploring the world around them - most of this discovery will be happening with their little hands and YES their mouths. Lots of drooling will start occurring and random finger chewing will happen as well.

❗People tend to think that these are all signs of teething when in reality, your kiddo is just exploring and learning and it is a normal part of their development.

🌟To make sure that your child is actually teething, there are several signs to look out for.

Along with difficulty sleeping, these symptoms usually include:

✔ irritability/fussiness
✔ excessive drooling
✔ chewing
✔ red and/or swollen gums (is the main symptom)
✔ low grade fever (<100.4 F)

But if your baby is experiencing a rash (other than a drool rash), fever (>100.4 F), or diarrhea, something other than teething may be the cause of their discomfort.

In that scenario, you should speak with your child’s pediatrician.

✨ So what are some tips to help soothe a teething infant?

✔ Give a gum massage
✔ Offer a cooling treat
✔ Maintain baby's regular bedtime routine and stay on track with their regular sleep schedule as closely as possible
✔ Use Tylenol as needed for pain: 30 minutes before bed is best
✔ Offer extra cuddles before nap and bedtime to help wind them down
✔ AVOID numbing products such as orajel. This is not recommended by dentists.
✔ Stay calm and carry on!

💟 Around 3-4 months old, you will see your baby starting to have increased night wakings, shorter naps, & more trouble falling to sleep.

➡This is due to the 4-month sleep regression, which results from your baby transitioning from 4-3 naps.

So where do we even start with this nap transition?

1⃣First, we want to follow an adjustable schedule like the one below:

✅ 7am wake up
✅ 8:30-9:45am Nap 1
✅ 11:15am-1pm Nap 2
✅2:45-3:4pm Nap 3
✅5/5:30pm Cat nap (this can be done in a stroller, carseat, carrier nap, etc)
✅~7/7:30pm Bedtime if cat nap happens

2⃣ We then want to use this sample schedule above, and then ADJUST for missed or shortened naps. We do this by:

✅ Moving bedtime up to 6/6:30pm if the “catnap” does not happen
✅ Increasing wake windows from 1.5-1.75hrs to 2hrs, especially if you see your baby having increased night wakings AND fighting naps
✅Consider nap training which involves having your baby falling asleep for their nap independently and using crib hour/giving them a chance to fall back to sleep ESPECIALLY on days with shortened naps. I recommend starting nap training with the FIRST nap of the day.

Around 3-4 months old, you will see your baby starting to have increased night wakings, shorter naps, & more trouble falling to sleep.

➡This is due to the 4-month sleep regression, which results from your baby transitioning from 4-3 naps.

There are many tips I recommend on getting through this regression, with the main focus being on 👇🏼

😴 Nap Timing and Wake Windows 😴

➡For a 3 month old on 4 naps
-Wake times are ~1.5 hrs
-Aim for 11-12 hours of night sleep and about 4 hours in naps
-If naps are short or you are dealing with multiple night wakings, you made need to use an earlier bedtime to compensate

➡For a 3 month transitioning to 3 naps:
-Wake times are stretching to 1.5-1.75hrs until there is no time for a 4th nap. Sometimes the last wake time shortens as the earlier ones increase due to the last nap becoming less restorative
-Offer the 4th nap around 5pm. If it does not happen, change gears and do your bedtime routine and aim for an earlier bedtime

➡For a 4 month old on 3 naps:
-Wake times are increased to 2hrs
-Total wake time 8.5-9hrs
🌟THIS is the age for 30min naps🌟 Play around with wake times and nap extensions and/or consider nap training (falling asleep independently)

Around 3-4 months old, you will see your baby starting to have increased night wakings, shorter naps, & more trouble falling to sleep.
This is due to the
❗4-Month sleep regression❗

This regression happens because of 3⃣ reasons:

👍🏼 Changes in your child’s sleep cycles
👍🏼 Learning how to roll
👍🏼 Sleep needs are changing (aka transitioning from 4-3 naps)

This can all be very overwhelming but FEAR NOT! I always recommend if you are feeling lost when it comes to your baby’s sleep... following a developmentally appropriate set sleep schedule for your little one is a great place to start.

Here is a 4-month sample schedule on 3 naps:
✅ 7am - wake up
✅ 8:45-10am - Nap 1
✅ 11:45am/12pm-115pm - Nap 2
✅ 3:15-415pm - Nap 3
✅ 6/6:15pm - Bedtime

I would adjust this schedule by 15min every other day until you find the “sweet spot” for your baby!

The 4-Month sleep regression is said to be the toughest regression your little one will go through...which can be very intimidating!

But fear not...there are useful tips you can follow to make this regression a lot easier on both your baby and you!

1⃣ Slowly break any lingering, non-sustainable sleep associations and allow your baby to put themselves to sleep at bedtime from wide awake. This is a totally acceptable age to implement sleep training if you choose to!

2⃣ Try a sleep sack to build a positive sleep association when transitioning out of the swaddle.

3⃣ Make sure baby’s sleep environment is as dark as a cave. Babies become way more aware of their surroundings and anything they can see will distract them from sleep.

4⃣ Use a white noise machine to minimize environmental distractions.

5⃣ Consider an earlier bedtime, especially if naps are short (extra naps add extra awake time and make them more overtired, not less!

6⃣ Make sure you’re getting in enough daytime feedings, as growth spurts often happen around regressions.

There are many myths in the sleep training world but there are ❗5⃣ Big Myths ❗ I have seen that are pushed to pressure parents out of getting more sleep for their babies.

There is a LOT of misinformation out there on social media today but I personally started this page to break the bias that surrounds sleep training.

5⃣ Big Myths in Sleep Training include:

🙅🏻‍♀️You cannot breastfeed at night anymore
🙅🏻‍♀️You cannot do contact naps
🙅🏻‍♀️It causes emotional detachment between mom and baby
🙅🏻‍♀️Your baby will not be a good sleeper outside of their sleep space at home
🙅🏻‍♀️It will cause your baby to emotionally “shutdown:

Whoever tried to “sell” you on these lies, has NOT done their research and has a misinformed definition on what sleep training ACTUALLY is.

➡ Sleep training does not mean lack of sleep support...and research shows that it increases the emotional bond between parents and baby due to everyone getting better rest.

➡ Sleep training means teaching your child how to independently sleep while also providing developmentally appropriate support.

➡ It means you can choose to still breastfeed or do night feedings all while teaching your child how to go back down to sleep once feeding is done.

➡ It means using contact naps to not only get in some snuggles 💗 but also increase daytime sleep which will result in better nighttime sleep.

Mama...you CAN do it all! With a balanced and research based approach. 😴 📖

⭐ Let me go into detail about why these 3 things are developmentally normal, and how to troubleshoot each of them.

✅ Night wakings: just like us adults who wake up in the middle of the night when we are cycling between light and deep sleep, the same happens to our kiddos. The only difference is that we have practiced the skill of putting ourselves back to sleep. This is why reiterate to parents who come to me for sleep training support that night wakings will ALWAYS happen - the difference sleep training makes is giving your child the tools to put themselves back to sleep when these wakings occur.

✅ Short naps: Short naps are developmentally normal until 6 months of age. This is because babies younger than this do not have the ability to connect their sleep cycles - meaning they cannot just from one cycle of sleep to the next. So when they transition from deep to light sleep, they may wake up with any little noise or change in their environment. If your baby is taking less than a 45-minute nap consistently, have no fear! They will soon grow out of this and make sure to black out their room and provide white noise will help promote longer naps in the long run.

✅ Noisy sleeping: Babies, especially newborns, can be super noisy when they are sleeping! This is because they do not undergo sleep paralysis like us adults do at night, so they may constantly grunt, cry, move and wiggle all around. Try waiting a few minutes before responding to your baby’s cries/noises to give them time to settle if they are in light sleep.

Before we talk about different strategies to tackle daylight savings, here are some general tips and things to consider when a time change is coming up:

➡Ensure your child’s room is dark in those early morning hours
➡Remember that it should take one day per one hour of change, so if the clock is only changing an hour, it shouldn’t take several days to get back on track.
➡Don’t be surprised if your child naturally shifts in the week or two leading up to the time change by waking up earlier in the spring
➡If something is currently off with your baby’s sleep, definitely address that before the time change!

🌻Now onto strategies!

3 options I recommend for the spring time change include the following:

Option 1⃣: Doing nothing i an option. I will limit daytime naps by 15-30 minutes if I feel like bedtime is going to be way later (from sleeping “in/later” the morning of). Don’t be surprised if you find they “self regulate” a bit with shorter nights and start waking a little earlier in the morning the week or two leading up to the time change.

Option 2⃣: You absolutely can wake them at their normal time on the “new” clock. If they’re usually awake at 7am, wake them by 7:30am so they don’t miss out on too much sleep.

Option 3⃣: If you let them sleep an hour “later” than usual, you can work your way back in 15-30 minute increments over the new few days (see example schedule above!)

✨ Here are some tips on how to troubleshoot night wakings for your little one ✨

1⃣ If you’re still providing a lot of assistance at bedtime for falling asleep, then the middle of the night will take time to come together as well. I wouldn’t expect nighttime wakings to get better until your child is falling asleep independently at bedtime. If you’ve used a very hands on method, it may be time to look at fading out that support to get things to come together a little faster! The Sleep Wave is a great option for this.

2⃣ How is your timing? Consider small schedule tweaks (maybe 15 mins less before bed, shortening some naps so you’re not exceeding 3(ish) hours of day sleep, or making sure your overall total awake time is not too low/high).

3⃣How consistent is the response to the night wakings? If your child is falling asleep independently at bedtime, I would make sure you set that boundary and expectation for independent sleep during most night wakings (and if you’re feeding, still, keeping 1-2 feedings after midnight).

4⃣ If you’re still room sharing, consider moving out temporarily or moving your child to their own room to see if that helps with the night wakings!

5⃣Triple-check the sleep environment! Make sure their sleep environment is appropriate (dark, white noise is loud enough, etc!)

6⃣ No screens within 90 mins of bedtime

🔆 I have been working as a NICU nurse for 5 years, and launched my sleep consultant business back in March of 2022. I fell in love with baby sleep when I sleep-trained my first son Anthony at 4 months old. After seeing the amazing sleep that he was getting, I decided to dive into sleep training research.

🔆 I ended up finding amazing evidence-based articles that supported the benefits of sleep in children and the benefits of sleep training - it was then that I decided to get my certification as a sleep consultant.

♥️ My first time working with families was in the NICU setting and I found a love in supporting parents and their children - especially during some tough times in their lives. Now I get to help even more families through sleep consulting: and I LOVE it.
